Building an alliance to map global supply networks

Glenn Magerman, Anton Pichler, Christian Diem, Alexandra Brintrup, François Lafond, Gert Buiten, Thomas Y. Choi, Vasco M. Carvalho, J. Doyne Farmer and Stefan Thurner

This article highlights the extreme complexity of global supply chains, which are made up of hundreds of millions of interconnected businesses. This complexity makes it difficult to understand economic dependencies and systemic vulnerabilities, as demonstrated by the COVID-19 crisis. The authors explain that recent advances in data and analytical methods now make it possible to map these networks on a large scale. They call for the creation of an international alliance bringing together governments, public institutions, scientists and private actors to structure this work. Such mapping would improve economic resilience, anticipate crises, increase supply chain transparency and better measure the environmental and social impacts of the global economy.
